Why Should We Improve Our Physical Health?

Staying active and maintaining a healthy diet is necessary at any age but it is especially important from your mid-30s when your risk of Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, depression and a long list of other mental and physical health conditions increases.

It’s easy to make excuses and forget to devote time to looking after your health when building a career or raising a family - which explains why more than 60 per cent of the global population is not sufficiently active.

According to Damian Martin Health & Fitness Townsville founder, those within the generation X age bracket who are neglecting their physical health need to become more aware of the long-term benefits they are missing out on.

Damian served almost 30 years in the Australian Army and has been in the game of keeping fit for most of his life.  “I know first-hand the significant impact maintaining physical health can have on improving your overall wellbeing – especially as you grow older and your body changes.”

Keeping physically active has been proven to improve your life span, regardless of any adverse inherited factors.  Physical activity, especially during your 30s and 40s, protects you against a multitude of chronic health problems, including many forms of cardiovascular disease.

Studies show that by doing more than 150 minutes of moderate exercise or an hour of vigorous physical activity each week, will reduce your risk of coronary heart disease by about 30 per cent.

By encouraging others to lead a healthy lifestyle, you need to start with yourself.

A large portion of generation X have children under the age of 12 who they want to see making positive decisions regarding their health. In this case, it is important to practice what you preach and lead the active lifestyle you would expect others to follow.

The National Health and Medical Research Council found that in recent years only one in 20 adults meets the guidelines for recommended daily serves of both fruit and vegetables. By having a healthy diet and increasing your physical activity you will protect your body from disease and extend your lifespan.
